President Piñera inaugurates new flagship school, Liceo Óscar Castro, and kicks off the school year in the O’Higgins Region

President Piñera inaugurates new flagship school, Liceo Óscar Castro, and kicks off the school year in the O’Higgins Region

President Piñera, on his final working visit to the O’Higgins Region, said that his Government “has made an enormous effort to improve the quality, funding and access to education at every level, not just for higher education which often receives all the attention, but also for elementary and secondary schools, as demonstrated by this high school, Liceo Óscar Castro, and of course nursery schools and preschools. Even though these children do not vote, protest or march, they have always been close to the heart of this Government.”

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, along with the Education Minister, Carolina Schmidt, arrived in Rancagua this morning to preside over the inaugural ceremony of the Óscar Castro flagship high school. This municipal school was rebuilt following the 2010 earthquake when it was forced to temporarily move its more than 2,300 students to the Bernardo O’Higgins school.

The President addressed all those present at the ceremony, emphasizing that “we have made an enormous effort so that you will have a school that is on par with the best schools anywhere; with good classrooms, good technology and facilities and a space to play sports.”

He also called on students to “become involved, to be committed. Education is not a burden, it’s not an obligation; it is a tremendous opportunity to grow, learn, understand the world that surrounds us and to fully develop oneself.”

On his final working visit to the O’Higgins Region, the President said that for his Government “one of the fundamental priorities was to do whatever was necessary to give our children and youth a good education.”

He ended his speech by saying that “we have made an enormous effort to improve the quality, funding and access to education at every level, not just for higher education which often receives all the attention, but also for elementary and secondary schools, as demonstrated by this high school, Liceo Óscar Castro, and of course for nursery schools and preschools. Even though these children do not vote, protest or march, they have always been close to the heart of this Government.”
